Anniversary of Sir John Logan Campbell's death

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Sir John Logan Campbell, often considered to be the founding father of Auckland. There are many reminders of Sir John in the Auckland of today, including his gift of Cornwall Park to the people of Aotearoa New Zealand. The deeds for the park can be found in the Sir George Grey Special Collections at Central City Library.

  1. This shows just how much he was respected, from Russell Stone's, "The Father and His Gift"
"On 13 June, most unusually, he remained in bed. He never rose from it again, a week later lapsing into a coma. At 5am on Saturday, 22 June he died. As the news spread rapidly through the city, people are said to have spoken 'with reverent affection for the great citizen who had just died.' Following the lead of the Town Hall, flags were flown at half-mast from business premises and private residences eveywhere. The Minister of Internal Affairs sent a telegram to the city expressing sympathy"
Implied cause of death: old age.
