Have revisited the Pa on numerous re visits to NZ. As a family we were nearby farmers, my mother is Ngapuhi, the Pa is Tapu although I was not forbidden to venture up there. From everything I’ve found, the electrification of the Takapuna Tramways & Ferry Company line never advanced beyond the proposal stage, so I am not sure where the power plant was to be located. The best guess is that it would have been at or near the Takapuna tram shed, which was on Lake Road where the bus stops and ANZAC carpark is today. The original 1908 plan had the power plant across the street from there, where the Ministry of Social Development offices now are, but I have never seen a power plant proposed for the actual tram shed site. Considering the power plant would also provide public electricity for streetlights and some commercial businesses, it would have made sense to place it somewhere near central Takapuna, and the tram company already owned that entire property, so there was excess space for it.Auckland Librarieshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12574555209830314635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5326867358384170422.post-24106935589593816352023-11-22T12:00:44.576+13:002023-11-22T12:00:44.576+13:00Hi Keith,

He met Beatrix Dobie; on 8 Dec 1916 he wrote:
"I have had a good deal to do in connection with +mas arrangements & concerts. I had a trip to London one day last week. It was only for a day but we got through a lot of work. One of the ladies in Ao Tea Roa went with me; we were sent up by the Entertainment Committee to settle regarding the presents & the amount of money to be spent.
Miss Dobie who went up with me has been in hospital ever since. She is played out. In fact all the girls that work in the Club are done. They have so much to do. You see there are over three thousand in the Depot & if you saw the loaves that are cut into sandwiches every day & the piles of bread & butter & buttered scones. They do all this in the morning & are then kept serving out stuff till 9.30pm at night. I reckon it is one of the best places in the camp. The stuff is all baked there too. The trouble is that extra assistants can’t be got. Some of the officers wash dishes for them & pour out tea etc. but it is graft for the girls all the same."Jeff Kennedynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5326867358384170422.post-8484173556877059632023-11-03T06:30:17.275+13:002023-11-03T06:30:17.275+13:00Where was the planned powerhouse for powering the ...Where was the planned powerhouse for powering the tramway going to be located? Andrews by the late Dame Judith Binney: 27 Mayh 2002.
Dear Colin,
"...What you need to do is write a brief note about the use of the triple star on early Maori flags, which properly represented the 'three islands' in unity. (you might like to note that the South Island was then called the Middle Island.) You cite the Encyclopedia. You should also draw attention to the Anglican Church heraldry and the Church's use of the triple star image, as you have also noted. The interesting aspect is, as you said right from the beginning, is that the Irishman, Bracken, probably took it from the early Maori flags, most notably (perhaps) Te Kooti's so-called 'Union Jack' and before that, the first Kingitanga flags. Bracken's poem, first published in 1876, later became the national anthem in which no-one remembers why we sing about NZ's 'triple star'. That's the guts of your discovery. ...".
Dame Judith, in another later dated statement: "...went on to say in writing..."you should mention this, (that is another Andrews discovery, reference Brackens poem he wrote called, 'Jubilee Day' for the 1890 commemoration day - the 50th Anniversary of New Zealand since its founding in 1840 at the Treaty of Waitangi) and connect it with your main idea, That Bracken was probably borrowing from the Maori 'triple star' flags. Your new poem (Jubilee Day) confirms this".
17 Jun. 2002 Dear Colin,
"Thanks very much for ther reference: fascinating.
Two points: the triple star as 3 islands: note that the third is Stewart (not Chathams), which is why South Island was called the Middle Island (as I mentioned in my last letter.) The web page constructor should be informed.
Most interesting that T.H. Smith dropped this line entirely" (that is 'Guard Pacific's triple star') (with other changes) in his 'translation'. He was a Civil Commissioner, in charge of the Bay of Plenty region in the wars".
Judith Binney
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5326867358384170422.post-17657947777211959162023-10-31T19:49:58.312+13:002023-10-31T19:49:58.312+13:00Love you New ZealandLove you New ZealandAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5326867358384170422.post-15612610114309642512023-10-17T12:48:11.918+13:002023-10-17T12:48:11.918+13:00The young boy in tbe middle of that photo witnessi...The young boy in tbe middle of that photo witnessing the homes burning. We lived in the original homestead during these years. My older sister kept her horses there and I remember the stable block before it was converted into the youth group accommodation. We then bought a piece of land on the other side of the Orams Road bridge, at the end of Peguero Place part of the original Peguero farm. I remember the remains of that homestead being at the bottom of our property. Was very rural back then we rode our horses all over the neighbouring 200 acre farm which also bordered Totora Park. Interesting to see the history of the area. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
